The Story Of Flagler College’s First 50 Years Told Through The People, Places And Things That Shaped It

Each of the 50 people, places and things that we selected represent a major milestone in the development of Flagler College. Our selections include the expected and the unexpected, ordinary, everyday objects and the extraordinary people that helped us turn nouns into verbs and change lives. Together, they tell our story. But it is not the complete story. Like all milestones, they indicate how far we have come. They do not measure the thousands of stepping stones, those everyday moments, the hard work and dedication, that got us to those key celebrated moments in our rich history.

Bright Future

For today’s incoming freshman, much has changed. In the beginning, only 8 majors were offered. Today it is 34. The full-time faculty has grown from 17 in 1968 to 121 today. New majors like Marketing, and Hospitality and Tourism and new minors like Music have been added. In the 50 years since its founding, old buildings were renovated, new buildings constructed, others purchased, refurbished and repurposed. Our historic campus appears to be frozen in time, but today’s campus experience is totally modern. It’s not bricks and mortar, restoration or revitalization. Rather, it’s the students, faculty and staff who pump new life into these historic structures. While we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished, we don’t look back. Today’s freshmen have much to look forward to. It’s certain they will need those sunglasses, for their future is very, very bright.
